Tenacity

1) Tenaciousness is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
I have developed good time management skills and also a better attention to detail. Because I'm taking this course 100% online and I am in charge of my own assignments and 'class time', it is completely up to me to watch the lectures, complete the quizzes on time, and complete my blog posts on time without going to class at a set time. Especially during busy weeks, it can be hard to remember all these different pieces of the class, so using my planner and writing due dates down has helped me a lot to remember everything and stay on track. Attention to detail is important because some of the assignments have very specific requirements, and I also have to consciously remember to declare the assignments after I complete them. This is something I've never had to do before, so I've had to develop this instinct to declare a post after I finish it.
2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?
I had a pretty hard time figuring out what kind of product I would want to create, and thought of a lot of different ideas before I settled on what I did. I felt like giving up a lot during that section because after every idea that just would not be logistical or smart, it was discouraging to identify a new need and think of something people would actually maybe want. I managed to pull through by really slowing down my thought process and picking apart my daily routine. Through doing this, I thought of all my personal needs and what a product would be that I would want to buy. I think I've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months through having to keep up with lectures and soaking up that information while also dreaming up an innovative product and thinking about who I want to target with my product, what I specifically want it to be, etc. I've had to really think like an entrepreneur and it can be inspiring/motivating.
3) Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?
Tip #1: Time management is key! Getting a planner and writing down due dates/setting aside specific time to watch lectures helps a lot in not having to do things last minute and feeling overwhelmed.
Tip #2: Take the time to look at other people in your groups' blogs because you can gain a lot of inspiration and motivation from peer work. I've seen some really great ideas and thoughtful work that wanted me to make sure my work was up to par. It helps you develop a tenacious mindset by wanting to always improve and present creative, inspired ideas.
Tip #3: Don't be afraid for your ideas to fail or not be good at the beginning. When you have to think of a product, it can be kind of overwhelming and I, at least, felt pressure to create something useful and not stupid. Instead of trying so hard to think of one AMAZING idea like I did (and failed at a lot), I would look at your bug list and draw inspiration from that. Come up with a huge list of possible ideas and narrow it down from there, choosing which ones you could build on, specify, and improve.
I've included a picture of Oprah because she is one of my favorite entrepreneurs and I admire her a lot. I actually just found out today that she did not go to college!

  1. Hey Linnea,

I really liked your post about tenacity! I admire that you mentioned some if it being about attitude. Especially in the realm of becoming an entrepreneur, you have to take charge at times through the excitement as well as the frustration. I also had a difficult time think about what I wanted to involve into my product/service. Professor Pryor always mentions how everyone wants to have an app. I actually made my product into an app at first, but then quickly incorporated it into a system already made today.
