Solving the Problem

Selected Opportunity: Paper straws are a great alternative to plastic straws in being eco-friendly, but they are not functional and often soak up the drink and become flimsy/unusable.

Product/service: A straw that is functional and able to stay sturdy but also benefits the ocean and animals who inhabit the ocean by being made of a sea kelp formula that marine life can consume.

I would intend to sell this straw to all establishes that previous used plastic straws in distributing their drinks to consumers. Because plastic straws are now more frowned upon and people are looking for businesses that are helping the environment instead of contributing to more harm, this could be in great interest to the business.  The straw will also be made of a material that won't bend easily or dissolve like paper straws do. It will be durable enough to last during the reasonable time someone is drinking something, but not durable to the point where it is becoming permanent litter that harms the environment.

  1. Hello Linnea,
I really like your idea and I am a fan of it. I have seen countless people litter and leave their plastic straws on the street which hurts the environment. I have also had those paper straws you discussed and I am not a a fan of them because they get all soggy and it it just honestly not enjoyable. Would you be in favor of people purchasing those metal straws and just bringing it with them everywhere they go so they can reuse the same straw and help the environment?
    Great Job!

  2. Hey Linnea,
First and foremost I would like to say that I cannot stand the paper straw! Metal straws are not going to do the trick so I agree that your idea of an economic beneficial straw would put us in the right direction.

  3. Hi Linnea,
I like the idea of creating an environmentally-safe straw, and the idea of it being durable enough to last in your drink but not on the planet could be a good start for slogan building. This project would ultimately involve a lot of trial and error/experimentation; but I believe you can eventually reach your goal. I'm interested to see if someone will save the paper straw industry or top it anytime soon.
