Identifying Local Opportunities

Opportunity 1:  "Nearly 1 in 3 female UF undergrads in survey report unwanted sexual contact" https://www.gainesville.com/news/20191023/nearly-1-in-3-female-uf-undergrads-in-survey-report-unwanted-sexual-contact This story discusses the survey results from the University of Florida's 2019 sexual assault and misconduct survey. Compared to results from the same survey in 2015, there was a near 10% jump in surveyors reporting "nonconsensual sexual contact". The survey was sent out to a variety of students. Some undergraduates, some grads, and some other professional students who were 18 years or older were surveyed. There was also a significant increase in people completing the survey in comparison to past years, which allows for more accurate responses. Generally, almost half of UF students report they have experienced at least one kind of sexual harassment. The problem presented in this story is clear. There is an ongoing issue of sexual harassment and unwan...

Opportunity Belief

My Belief: There is an opportunity in creating an environmentally friendly straw that is completely decomposable and good for the planet, but isn't made out of paper. Description: There is an unmet need for a straw that is good for the environment and won't end up as litter, but one that isn't made out of paper. Paper straws, although great for the environment, disintegrate quickly and can become unusable very fast. Anyone who uses straws has this need, especially in cities like Gainesville where plastic straws have been banned completely. This need is fairly new, because up until more recent years everyone still used and supported plastic straws and were less aware of the negative effects they had on the environment/ecosystems. This need comes from the rise in popularity of paper straws, which answers the fourth question of what are people doing to meet this need now? Paper straws are a great first step, but I have heard so many complaints from people whose straws become...

My Entrepreneurship Story

Image
From an early age, I remember my dad was always an entrepreneur to me. He technically worked at a technology and software company in Seattle (where I'm from), but he was always brainstorming and concocting new ideas for products that he dreamed up in his head. I admired him for this creative part of his brain that never seemed to stop working, but I admired him even more for making his dreams come to life. The first product I remember him dreaming up was called CannaRelief. It was a small product, the size of a Five Hour Energy bottle, that was meant to alleviate the effects of marijuana when the consumer drank it. In an area where marijuana is legal and I had seen the effects of people being "too high" countless times, I thought this was genius. He was constantly asking my opinions on bottle designs that he crafted on his laptop, and would ask how I felt about different flavors that he created himself in our own kitchen. Just like we discussed in class, my dad saw a n...

BUGS!

20 Things That Bug Me: 1. The sound of people loudly chewing while eating chips or anything crunchy in general. This bug exists because people will often chew with their mouths open and put multiple chips in their mouth at once, which just makes it messier, louder, and more obnoxious. 2. The long line at the Chik-fil-a underneath the Standard right before breakfast is about to end. This bug exists because of all the residents at the Standard AND everyone else in the area all trying to get breakfast at Chik-fil-a before it ends at 10:30. Since people are often hungover and waking up just in time to make it, there's a huge rush right before it ends. 3. People who tailgate me extremely close to my car while driving. This exists because people are in a hurry while driving and think that tailing me will make me go faster, when in reality I don't have control over the speed of traffic and I won't risk a speeding ticket just because this person is late. 4. When I sit do...
