What's Your Secret Sauce?
1) Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique. What is it about you, exactly, that makes you different? Write this up in a detailed list.
Open-mindedness: I always have an open mind when approaching situations and brainstorming. I think this is special because it allows me to never let myself settle on an idea when there could be improvement, and also helps with avoiding conflict with others. Keeping an open mind means I can be flexible and open to change, like in a situation where someone is pitching an idea change.
Communication: I love talking to people whether they are old friends or strangers, and am good at engaging in interesting communications. I don't tend to get nervous around new people which helps make new connections.
Organizational skills: It is easy for a lot of people to get unorganized, but I love filling out my planner daily with what I have to do each month, week, day, etc. to best keep track of things. Setting reminders and staying strictly organized helps me stay on track and focused with what I want to accomplish.
Humor: I love to make people laugh and use humor in situations that are uncomfortable or awkward. I can naturally find something to joke about in a situation.
Empathy: I deeply feel the emotions that others feel and it helps me be understanding and compassionate towards others. It helps me respond appropriately to situations and build good relationships.
2) Interviews:

3) Reflect on the differences.
I think that was a big overlap in how others see me and how I see myself when it came to personality related skills, like communication. One of my main skills I saw that I had was my ability to make people feel welcome and make friends easily with both new and old people. People that I interviewed definitely didn't go as deeper into the other skills that I saw in myself, like motivation, probably just because when we are together and hanging out they see better examples of social skills. However, I thought it was interesting that the person that undoubtedly knows me the best, my boyfriend, said my best trait was empathy. It was a huge coincidence. That's what I put for myself and one of my favorite qualities about myself, and I think he was able to notice it because he has seen it so much for himself. I think in general my interviewees were correct about me and I wouldn't go back and change what I initially wrote. Everything was pretty on point!
Hey Linnea,
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the most important skills or abilities that many people don't put or forget to put is humor. A very harsh or uncrackable owner/manager is really difficult to work with. Whereas being humorous but professional creates a work environment that you and your employees can both enjoy. Being open-minded is also very important especially because your communication skills will be very involved when discussing any task or obstacle.
Hey Linnea,
ReplyDeleteFour out of five skills you mentioned yourself having, and the interviewees noticed too, make you great with people in any environment. A lot of business can be done by being a person that people like, this is a skill set that can be used across various fields too though. Then adding organizational skills brings these people skills into a new tier.
Hi Linnea,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this post, and it was even greater to see how well your own opinions of yourself matched with what people had to say. You can tell from the interviews that you definitely have the ability to make others laugh or spark life in someone so that was nice. As your roommate said, your organized manner will definitely translate well into your work life. Best of luck and great job.
Hey Linnea,
ReplyDeleteI think it was a great that out of the five skills you mentioned to set yourself apart, your interviewees also mentioned four of those. This shows that you did a great job of choosing your five people who know you the best and that they know you the same amount that you know yourself. Your interviews show that you have the ability to make others laugh which adds to your communication aspect. Great post!!
